Back then, I thought I was brave, but I wasn’t. Not by a long shot. I was afraid all the time, and I didn’t muster the courage to speak up and stand up for myself, or for others. I didn’t have the strength to take on that which was wrong and unfair, glaring me right in the face. I was afraid of not being liked or accepted if I revealed my true feelings. And I was deeply afraid that I never really knew enough to “belong” there in a powerful way (the old impostor syndrome played big tricks with my head). Now that I’m in my own business and have chosen a direction that feels right and good to me, I’ve seen that thousands (dare I say millions) of people aren’t brave enough in their lives either, to be who they really are, and share what they believe, or make the impact they long to.
Your Family’s Medical History (and Future) The mere act of starting a family can be an act of optimism. It’s a way of saying, “No matter how bad things might be now, I believe that there’s hope for the next generation.” The world can be a troubling place, but seeing life through the eyes of a child is enough to make just about anyone hopeful. It can also make you a bit afraid, though. It’s one thing for a child to have Mother’s eyes and Father’s nose, but it’s another thing entirely for parents to pass down potentially serious medical conditions. Genetic testing Hearing things like, “Grandpa and Uncle Joe had diabetes” or, “Your sister and dad both suffer from depression” can be useful. It can let you know that there’s a possible family history of those diseases, so maybe you need to watch your sugar intake carefully, or if you’re feeling sad and hopeless lately, maybe you need to go to a doctor and get screened for depression.

But Election Day is different. Tuesday its okay to say, Did you vote? And its a good question to ask. Its not a lightening rod like, Do you support late-term abortion? but you can learn a lot about your co-workers by whether or not they vote, even if you dont know how they vote. One of my earliest memories is of my mom taking me into the voting booth with her. (I have never actually seen parents do this in other places maybe its a special treat for us rural Illinois kids.) She made voting seem like a very important treat, and I remember being shocked as a teenager to discover that there were nonvoters in my neighborhood. Now I understand that there are three steps to the process of voting: Convince yourself that your vote matters, figure out who to vote for, and make time to vote. The first two steps, youll have to do on your own, but I can help with the third.
